Soggy, soggy, soggy grounds forces Grandview to throw in towel.
BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 18, 2002 . . . Heavy rains throughout the night and into the early hours of Saturday morning turned the one-third-mile, clay banked oval at Grandview Speedway into a soggy, soggy, soggy mess. Promoter Bruce Rogers threw in the towel postponing the triple feature show scheduled for Saturday night until Saturday, May 25, 7 p.m. The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge Modifieds will run in a 30-lap feature, starting 29 cars, on Saturday night and the NASCAR Late Models, each feature starting 26 cars, will run in two 20-lap main events. A full slate of qualifying events will also be included in the Memorial Day weekend tripleheader.
"It did not take us long to figure that there was no way to get the track ready for Saturday night racing once the rain stopped. It would have been hours before we could even get heavy equipment on the track. And with no sun, heavy moisture in the air, cold temperatures, it may have taken longer than that. With all that in mind, and thinking of the comfort of the fans on what would have been a very cold and damp night, we decided it was the best decision to make," said promoter Bruce Rogers.
Kerry Kratz, winner of one NASCAR Modified feature already this season, is the current point leader with 1432 points. Jeff Strunk, a former champion at Grandview Speedway, has 1423 counters for second place while Kenny Gilmore has tallied 1194 points. Ray Swinehart leads the feature winners with two victories. The two time former champion is 11th in the point standings.
In NASCAR Late Models, Chuck Schutz is the point leader with 1133 counters. He has not visited victory lane so far this season but has been close. Second spot is held by multi time Late Model champion Dean Stoudt with 1105 points. Third spot belongs to young Sam Schlosberg with 1029. Interesting to note that none of the top three have a feature win to their credit this season.
All these drivers plus a long list of other well known names in the sport will be at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night, May 25, 7 p.m. for the two 20-lap features for Late Models and 30-lap feature for the NASCAR Modifieds. A full series of qualifying events will also be included as part of the Memorial Day Weekend action.
And on Sunday, May 26, 7:30 p.m. the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Five Feature Show will be presented. Featured will be the 410 sprints, URC sprints, ARDC midgets, NASCAR Modifieds and NASCAR Late Models. Gates open both nights at 5 p.m.
