Fourth score for Stefanik in Stafford's Spring Sizzler STAFFORD SPRINGS, Conn. (May 4, 1998)
Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I., became the first two-time winner this season on the Featherlite Modified Series, A NASCAR Touring Division, by winning the 27th Carquest Auto Parts Spring Sizzler at the Stafford Motor Speedway.
It was the second consecutive Sizzler win for Stefanik and his fourth career victory in this race. He becomes the first driver to win four Spring Sizzlers.
"Winning this race once meant a lot to me," Stefanik said. "But to win it four times is something I am proud of."
Stefanik led on two different occasions for a total of 100 laps. He passed Doug French of Wall, N.J., on lap 135 for the lead and held the top spot for the remainder of the 200-lap event.
Tim Connolly of Endicott, N.Y., challenged Stefanik over the final 50 laps. Connolly eventually finished second in the Purina Tidy Cat Dodge. Tony Ferrante Jr. of Franklin Square, N.Y., finished third after starting 18th in Ferrante Racing Chevrolet.
Jan Leaty of Williamson, N.Y., finished fourth in the ATC Pontiac. Early race leader Charlie Pasteryak of Lisbon, Conn., finished fifth in the Averill Design Chevrolet.
Pasteryak led the race from the opening green. Stefanik, after starting seventh, worked his way to the front taking the lead on lap 64. Stefanik led the race until a caution period on lap 98. Stefanik and the majority of the cars on the lead lap headed down pit road for fresh tires.
Tom Fox, who elected not to pit, took over the top spot and held the point until he pitted during a caution period on lap 118.
Doug French assumed the lead and was able to hold off Stefanik for 15 laps before Stefanik made the pass for the win.
