Martinsville, VA---NASCAR's Winston Cup and Featherlite Modified Tour will invade Martinsville Speedway next weekend for the NAPA AutoCare 500 and Goody's Body Pain 200. The Modifieds will race on Saturday, September 30 at 3 p.m. in the $87,211 Goody's Body Pain 200, and the Winston Cup stars will run in the $2,115,007 NAPA AutoCare 500 at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 1. Jeff Burton tested at Martinsville Speedway this week and that could be bad news for the rest of the field. In his last outing, the driver of the Exide Batteries Ford led all the way in winning at New Hampshire. He was fast again in two days of testing this week on Martinsville's tight .526-mile track. Burton, from nearby South Boston, VA, has won in two divisions at Martinsville, taking a 150-lap Busch Grand National Series race in 1990 and the fall Winston Cup event in 1997. Martinsville will be the final push and shove short track battle of the season. Burton trails Bobby Labonte by 168 points in the Winston Cup Championship chase with only eight races remaining. Burton has three wins this season, as does Labonte. Dale Jarrett is third in the standings, 174 back, with one win while Dale Earnhardt is fourth, 201 points behind with one victory. Kyle Petty also was quick in practice last Wednesday. Petty will drive the #45 Sprint car. Casey Atwood, who also tested, will make his second Winston Cup start in the Motorola Ford owned by Ray Evernham. Jeff Gordon is the defending champion of the NAPA AutoCare 500. Reggie Ruggiero took the 1999 Goody's Body Pain 200 edging out Satch Worley of Rocky Mount, VA as 13 cars finished on the lead lap. There were four lead changes among four drivers and six cautions for 33 laps. Bud Pole qualifying for the NASCAR Winston Cup cars will be 3 p.m. on Friday, September 29 to determine the top 25 starters for the NAPA AutoCare 500. Joe Nemechek's NAPA AutoCare 500 qualifying record of 95.223 miles per hour will be on the line, while Tony Stewart holds the track Winston Cup record of 95.275 miles per hour. Following qualifying, the Intermedia Allison Legacy Series cars compete in the Anderson Tractor/John Deere Challenge 30-lap race. The three-quarter scale replicas of Winston cup cars are powered by four-cylinder Mazda 2200 truck engines and have standard Mazda five-speed transmissions. NASCAR's lightning-fast Featherlite Modifieds practice at 8 a.m. on Saturday with second round Winston Cup qualifying at 11:15 a.m. Modifieds time trial at 11:30 a.m. with Happy Hour for Winston Cup cars at 1 p.m. The $87,211 Goody's Body Pain 200 for Modifieds starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
