NOTES OF INTEREST: The Myrtle Beach 100, Aug. 9 marks the second race of the 1997 season for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series at the famed Myrtle Beach Speedway. This mid-summer race date is generally used as an opportunity for the teams to combine some much needed vacation time together with the day to day operations of their racing programs. Pre-race talk in the pits is often, as much about how they did at one of the many go kart tracks in the area or on the golf course as it is about set-ups and practice times. But when it comes time to strap in and go racing there is no better racing anywhere than you'll find on this half mile. In the Spring race here, Will Hobgood picked up his second win of the '97 season and could use a repeat here to close some of the gap between himself and Series point leader Mike Swaim Jr. Going into this event, Swaim holds a 145 point advantage over Hobgood. Larry Caudill is the only driver that has ever won both ends of the April / August race dates since the Series started making two trips to the "Grand Strand" speedway in 1995. Mickey York has been to victory lane more times in a Dash car than any other NASCAR Goody's Dash Series Driver, past or present, having won here three times since 1992. Another driver that will be relying heavily on his experience at this track will be Charles Powell III. Powell was able to parlay his knowledge of Myrtle Beach Speedway into a win here in his very first NASCAR Goody's Dash Series start in 1996. Powell, driving for Christina Martin's Alibi's Race Team is currently leading in the 1997 Series Rookie of the Year standings over another strong contender, Ricky Bryant. When the Series visited here in the Spring, Brian Sockwell crushed the qualifying record with a 19.983 sec. lap at 96.9223 mph. But according the to Dash Series record books, only Andy Belmont, Shawana Robinson and Johnny Chapman have ever won a Dash Series event here from the pole position.
