FIRST WHERE IT COUNTS

Cole Whitt finished second Saturday night, but first where it counts.

The Red Bull rookie made his second NASCAR K&N Pro Series East start, finishing second at South Boston Speedway in the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota. Whitt's finish earned him the top spot in the overall drivers' standings.

"We were here to get a good run and come out with the points lead," Whitt said. And that's exactly what we did."

Race winner Max Gresham led all but four of the 150 laps, but Whitt made sure he had to work for his trip to victory lane. With just 15 laps to go, Whitt made a late-race charge, passing Gresham and leading two laps. Gresham was able to gain back the lead though and break clear over the final 10 laps to secure the win.

"I got to the outside of him - I think twice; I think we would have had him the first time if the yellow didn't come out," Whitt said. "That made it a little bit tougher. And then I had to fight Ryan (Truex) off. That was a good battle. I got back to the outside of (Gresham) one last time at the end and he was pushing us up. It's short track racing. He was doing his job, just like I was doing mine. I have to congratulate him."

Whitt is one of just two drivers to record two top-five finishes this season. Last week, Whitt brought home third at Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway in his stock car debut.
