Eddie Cheever III, the son of former Indianapolis 500 winner and Formula One driver Eddie Cheever Jr., will make his U.S. debut in NASCAR with this weekend's K&N race at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Cheever III, 22, will drive the No. 99 Toyota for Bill McAnally Racing in Friday’s Bully Hill Vineyards 125 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race.

“I’m really excited about this great opportunity to take another step in my career in NASCAR,” the 2014 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series rookie of the year said. “My goal is to become a Sprint Cup Series driver and the Whelen Euro Series opens this door for every European driver.

“This is a new step forward toward it.”

Cheever III’s career began in open wheel racing, where he won the Italian Formula 3 European Series and had a Formula One test with Ferrari in 2012.

A strong showing in NASCAR Euro

He joined the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series in 2014 and finished third in points after winning three races, the Junior “Jerome Sarran” Trophy and the Race and Win Pole Award with four pole positions.

“As a race car driver I always want to win, but the main goal for this race is to learn as much as I can from my competitors, my team and my teammates and also from the big guys in the Cup and Xfinity series,” he said.

“If I find myself in a favorable position, I will definitely try to get a good result. I’ll do my best as always and if we can contend for the win we’ll go for it.”

Cheever III, a native of Rome, Italy, began this season with a win in Valencia, Spain and has four top-five and eight top-10 finishes. He is second in the Euro series standings – 29 points behind Ander Vilarino – entering the playoffs at Autodromo dell’ Umbria in Magionne, Italy on Sept. 12.
