ELDER, MURRAY STILL FASTEST IN DAYTONA TESTS

Christian Elder of Minneapolis, Minn. and Darryl Murray of Fort Lawn, S.C. continue to post the fastest times in the second day of NASCAR Goody's Dash Series testing at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Elder, effectively raised the bar for his fellow competitors in this second day testing for the popular sub-compact touring series, turning the 2.5 mile superspeedway in 54.892 sec. at an average speed of 163.958 mph. in his David Watson prepared Pontiac Sunfire.

"This has been a real good session for us," said the 29-year-old driver. "The car is real comfortable and I think we'll be competitive when we come back in three weeks. We'll just have to wait and see how the six cylinders' get around here next Friday. After their test, we'll have a much better handle on how we stack up."

The lone Ford driver to participate in the second day of testing, Darryl Murray was again the second fastest in the day's test. Murray's Ford Probe turned in a lap just .2 of a second behind Elder at an average speed of 163.360 mph.

Only two other drivers were able to crack the 160-mph barrier on day two. Rookie of the Year runner-up in 1997, Ricky Bryant of Linwood, N.C., was fast right out of the box at 162.332 mph, and 1998 Rookie of the Year contender Billy Joyner, of Jacksonville, Fla. boosted his second day speed to 161.123 mph.

The six-cylinder test that Elder is referred to earlier, is the second half of NASCAR Goody's Dash Series testing which will take place this Friday, Jan. 23. In this upcoming test session, officials will get their first look at the new V-6 power plants under track conditions. The six cylinder engines will be phased in to the Series over the next year or two. During that phase in period, competitors will be able to run either, the traditional inline four-cylinder or the new V-6 engine.

The two-day test session just completed and the one-day test session scheduled for this Friday are in preparation for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series season opener, the Discount Auto Parts 200 by NAPA at Daytona International Speedway, Friday, Feb. 13.
