DAYTONA BEACH, FL. (February 10, 2001) Justin Hobgood led two times for thirty-one laps on his way to the checkered flag in the AC Delco 200 Presented by Discount Auto Parts, Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring event at Daytona International Speedway.
"I am so excited to be in victory lane at Daytona! Every stock car driver dreams of winning at Daytona. Today was my family's day." Goody's Dash Series racing is a family affair for the Hobgoods. Justin's father, Will Hobgood who was also the 1994 Series Champion, stepped aside three seasons ago to direct Jake and Justin's racing careers.
Derrick Kelley put his Discount Auto Parts Pontiac on the pole with a time of 55.052 seconds (163.482 mph). Kelley led for the first five laps before being shuffled out of the lead by Johnny Chapman. Chapman led the next twenty-six circuits when a flat tire caused him to lose 3 laps during a series of pit stops. Chapman, in his Randy Humphrey Racing prepared Pontiac Sunfire, was able to gain back two laps by charging hard on the restarts. Jake Hobgood took the lead on lap 32 with brother Justin in tow. For most of the event the first five cars stayed in a single line draft. Kelley was disappointed that he could not get back to the lead. "I just couldn't get anyone to help me," said Kelly. But those guys have paid their dues and I will have to pay mine to gain their respect."
The last of seven cautions came out when five cars crashed between turns three and four involving Jimmy Britts, Andy Lally, David Heitzhaus, David Hutto, and Christian Elder. Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring events do not end under caution, so the stage was set for the fan friendly "Green, White, Checkered" dash to the finish. Coming to the line Tim Nichols, B.J.Mackey, and Scott Weaver were three wide as they fought for third place honors.
Series Rookie of the Year contender Tim Nichols nosed ahead as they crossed under the checkered flag. Rounding out the top ten were Huffman, Joey Miller, Cam Strader, Roger Sawyer, and Shane Hmiel. Cam Strader, 2000 NGDS Rookie of the Year, stayed in the top ten most of the day. This was his first race on the high-banks of Daytona. He brought his Wesson Cooking Oil Mercury Cougar home in 8th place.
Defending race winner and reigning Series Champion Robert Huffman methodically worked his way to a 6th place finish. This was his first race in his new Toyota Celica. Huffman started the race in 17th place. Ned Combs gained the most positions in the race by starting 38th and finishing 14th overall. Mickey York, the only driver in the field to have competed in all 23 events at Daytona finished in 11th place. Thirteen cars finished on the lead lap with Derrick Kelley earning Rookie of the Race honors. Hobgood earned posted awards of $13,610 for the win. The next event for the Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring will be at the Orange County Speedway, Rougemont, NC on April 28, 2001.
