Steve Byrnes is the 2016 recipient of the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence.
Byrnes, who most recently worked with FOX Sports, passed away in April following a valiant battle with cancer. The Byrnes family will be recognized during the NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Jan. 22 in Charlotte, N.C. The Hall of Fame will also present a display highlighting Byrnes accomplishments.
“For three decades, Steve’s hard work and humanity brought NASCAR fans closer to their favorite drivers,” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France. “His passion for the stories and people he covered was always reflected in his work. Steve was respected for his professionalism and adored for his easy demeanor.”
Byrnes developed a relationship with the NASCAR fan base through his pit reporting for CBS, TNN and TBS as well as the engaging features he created while on Inside Winston Cup Racing and Racers on TNN.
Before his passing in April, Byrnes spent the past 14 years as a utility player for FOX and Speed. He served as a studio and trackside host and pit reporter. His contribution to the sport was recognized during the spring race at Bristol Motor Speedway when the track renamed the event the Food City 500 In Support of Steve Byrnes and Stand up to Cancer.
Byrnes was selected for the honor by his fellow journalists, NASCAR executives, public relations representatives and former drivers. The award is named for legendary broadcasters Ken Squier and Barney Hall. Previous recipients include Chris Economaki (2014) and Tom Higgins (2015).
