Ted Christopher Wins Busch North Sylvania 125 At New Hampshire International Speedway
(Loudon, N.H. - Sept. 16, 2005) - Ted Christopher rebounded from crashing at New Hampshire International Speedway in July's NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series by winning Friday's Sylvania 125. Christopher, driving the No. 35 Eagle Leasing Ford for NDS Motorsports, passed Brad Leighton on a lap 104 restart and held that lead through the checkers, which came six laps shy of the race's scheduled 125 laps because of rain showers.
With Thursday's qualifying rained out, Christopher didn't get the chance to back up his seventh-fastest practice time and instead was given the 21st starting position.
It took less than twenty laps of racing in Friday's Sylvania 125, a preliminary event during the track's NASCAR Nextel Cup weekend, for Christopher to break into the top ten. By lap 30, he was sixth and still moving up. He was up to fifth on lap 33, but gave fifth back a few laps later.
Caution waved on lap 49 and that saw most of the leaders, including Christopher, hit pit road for tires, fuel, and adjustments. Restarting tenth, he set his sights on the top five again and got there on lap 70. He wasn't finished though, moving all the way to second behind Brad Leighton. He took the lead from Leighton on a lap 82 restart, but gave that lead back to Leighton on another restart just five laps later.
"He just took off," Christopher said. He fell back into a three-car battle for second, returning to that spot as caution came out on lap 98. On the following restart, Christopher returned the favor to Leighton, relegating him to second.
"I knew on the next restart that I'd be pretty good on the outside and I was," he said, "and it all worked out."
Caution came out on lap 107, and the race did not return to green after that as rain moved in and rendered the track unraceable. After riding around under caution for twelve laps, the field was shown the checkers on lap 119, with Christopher the winner.
"Leighton had a better car on the long run, but I had a better car on the short runs," he said after the race. "If the race went another twenty laps, he probably would have gotten me, who's to say. When it starts getting down to the final laps you drive as hard as you can and hope for the best."
The race from NHIS was broadcast live on HDNet television, and will be replayed on SpeedTV at a later date. Check your local listings for the exact date and time.
The next race for NDS Motorsports will be next Friday afternoon at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. Christopher has raced there in NASCAR Busch Series competition, but never in Busch North Series action.
"I'm looking forward to that place," Christopher said.
