10/26/2002 Lakeville, CT -- Paul Wolfe finished fourth Saturday in the Busch North Series' final race of 2002 at Lime Rock Park. "Today we really felt we had the field covered, but the race got cut short," said Wolfe. NASCAR officials called the race at 63 laps due to darkness, after rain played havoc with the schedule for a third straight weekend. "We were close to taking third at the line," said Wolfe. "I'm happy with another top-five, but I thought today was our turn to break through for a win."
Last weekend at Lime Rock, Wolfe was sitting on the second-fastest qualifying lap when the session was cut short by rain. Because three cars were not able to take qualifying runs, the whole session was scrapped, and today's starting lineup was set by owner points. Due to his limited schedule, that put Wolfe in slot 24 to start. "To start from 24th and finish fourth without a scratch on the car, you would have to say we had the car to beat," explained Wolfe. "Performance Friction Brakes has supported us all year. The right brakes are really key on road courses, and they came through again today."
Denny Doyle used a no-pit strategy, made possible by a number of caution laps, to win the race. Bryon Chew, who also did not pit, finished second, with Brad Leighton, Wolfe, and Greg Schaefer rounding out the top five. Andy Santerre won the Busch North Series 2002 points championship by just nine points over Matt Kobyluck with a fourteenth place finish.
Competing in his third partial BNS season in 2002, Paul finished in the top-ten six times, and led over 150 laps in eight events. "We weren't able to get our first win, which was our goal for this year, but we were competitive every weekend, and we learned a lot for next year," said Wolfe. "I'm lucky to have a group of fans, crew members and supporters like Astrocom and SCOTT® Products that are really excited about our program, and I'm already looking forward to 2003."
