Lee, NH - (4/18/99) The Busch North Series, a NASCAR Touring Division, opened its 1999 racing season this afternoon with a 150-lap event at Lee USA Speedway. Kelly Moore, driver of the LesCare Kitchens Pontiac Grand Prix, started off his 13th season of competition on the Busch North Series with a respectable 7th place finish. New Hampshire native Brad Leighton picked up his fourth consecutive victory at the 1/3-mile track.
During the first round of qualifying, Moore found himself among the 10 fastest competitors and after the traditional redraw started 8th on the 30-car grid. As the green flag dropped on the new racing season, Leighton drew a comfortable lead over Jeff Taylor and Tracy Gordon. Moore remained in the 8th spot for nearly 40 laps before he was able to pass Dennis Demers for 7th. "Our car was not handling good in the middle part of the turns," explained Moore. "Later in the race we really had to slow the car down in the middle of the turns, we just had a tough time getting our chassis tuned with the Penske Shocks."
Though Moore and his team battled with the chassis setup all day, Moore did an excellent job battling on the track, moving his Pontiac Grand Prix into the top-5 before the halfway point of the race. The race was briefly red flagged on lap 92 after Ben Rowe pounded the outside retaining wall, igniting a fire in the engine compartment. As the race restarted, Moore again was trapped on the outside groove and lost two spots as Jerry Marquis and Tom Carey, Jr. fought their way to the front. Moore held off late race challenges from Tom Bolles and Dave Dion to take home a top-10 finish. "We're happy to come out of here with a top-10 finish," the 1995 Busch North Series Champion said. "This is a tough track and we stayed out of trouble and brought the car home in one piece. We definitely learned a lot about our chassis here today and anticipate a good race at Riverside in a couple of weeks."
What's Next: The LesCare Kitchens team will begin two days of testing at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, NH. Moore and his team = will take both their Busch North and Busch Series cars to the track. The LesCare Kitchens team will be competing in both Busch races on May 8th. The next Busch North Series race will be held on May 1st at Riverside Park Speedway in Agawam, MA
