Dale Quarterley takes eighth at Beech Ridge despite mid-race spin.
Dale Quarterley recorded his second top ten finish of the 2002 NASCAR Busch North Series season after placing eighth in Saturday night's 150-lap contest at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, located in Scarborough, Maine. Quarterley's finish came despite a turn three spin on lap 97 that cost him several positions but did not bring out the caution flag.
The night started with Quarterley qualifying fifteenth after putting up a 15.657-second lap in qualifying. Not satisfied with that, Quarterley and his crew set about making numerous changes to his Land O Lakes Chevrolet so it would perform better in the race.
Despite a pair of lengthy yellows in the race's first half, Quarterley had moved into the top ten and was running ninth. He was attempting to pass another car for eighth but another car had worked inside of Quarterley and the two made contact, sending Quarterley spinning.
"It was a number of things coming together at once," he said. "We were a little loose getting into the corners but good coming off, and the guy behind me was better getting in but not as good as me getting off. We were going the same speed, but doing it on opposite places of the track. Then finally I got a little loose on the straightaway and he got a nose under me, and I didn't realize he was that far under me. I pinched him a little and he was carrying a little too much speed."
Quarterley spun 360 degrees in turn three on lap 97 but soon had the car righted and continued racing, though he lost a number of positions. Three laps later the caution came out and Quarterley pitted for right-side tires. Returning to the race outside the top ten, he resumed his charge towards the front of the field. Despite many laps run under caution through the final 50 laps, Quarterley returned to eight place and finished there.
"We went overboard with the changes we made for qualifying, so we backed up a little for the race and the thing was actually real good all night," he said. "We took a spring rubber out of the right rear and put two tires on and the thing was golden from then on. But we'd go two laps and have a caution, then go two more laps and have a caution. I just didn't have any time to get back to the front. We ended up eighth so we still had a decent night, and a bunch of guys who have been getting us on points the last few weeks were behind us. We came back from that spin and had a good night, so I think overall we had a good day."
Quarterley and the Busch North Series will take a week off before heading to Connecticut's Stafford Motor Speedway for the first of three races there this year. The race will be held Friday, June 21st.
