Vidalia GA (January 24,2003) Life is just peachy for this Georgia Peach who this week got to live out her dream and then some in real time. Pittman has always aspired to take to the legendary track at Daytona and she did during the Goody's Dash Series NASCAR Touring testing. "First out, we were 26th fastest out of the 40 cars on the track. By the end of testing we were up to 16th fastest and I was pleased with that," said Pittman. "I enjoyed the time I got to spend drafting with Kelly Sutton and Danny Bagwell, getting up to speeds of 161 was awesome," she added. "If I never raced again, just the experience of driving that track will last me forever."
Earlier this week another one of her dreams came true as she got to meet another Georgia racecar driver, Winston Cup racer, Bill Elliot. "I have always thought Bill was a great driver, after meeting him I realized he is a real class act," said Pittman. Bill contacted Pittman for a private test of Golden Isles Speedway one of the venues in the Triple Crown Series Event at the end of the month. Elliot has only raced in 2 late model races and won one of them, he is pondering throwing his hat into the ring for this event.
They drove the ½ mile track while Pittman showed him the line. "After a few spins around he came back and wanted to go over it again with me. After that, Bill had the car going about 160 in the backstretch and was flat-footing it in two of the turns," said Pittman. Bills comment about the track was, "This is a different type of animal, not like clay and not like asphalt, it is a breed of its own."
Ray Cook UDTRA Top Driver was on hand to show Bill the ropes. Elliot, who requested a private session with no media, seemed to enjoy the break from the hype and the challenge of racing on a new surface. "He was like a kid in a candy store just enjoying himself," said Pittman.
Pittman who finished 15th in points last season is looking forward to a top ten finish this year. Lucas Oil and the Grand Seas Resort will sponsor her in Daytona on February 9th. The race will broadcast live on SPEED Channel at 11:00 a.m. and is also planned to be re-aired the race on February 10th, 20th and 21st, check local listings for more information.
