Ty Dillon moving up the ladder at RCR

Like his brother, Austin Dillon, before him, Ty Dillon is steadily moving up the ranks of his grandfather's race team, Richard Childress Racing. RCR announced on Tuesday that Ty Dillon will make his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut Saturday in the 200-mile event at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. He'll be behind the wheel of the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

"I'm very excited to get my first start in the Nationwide Series at Dover in the South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet," Dillon said.

Dillon drives for grandfather, Richard Childress, full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, piloting the No. 3 Chevrolet that his brother drove to the series championship in 2011. Dillon inherited that ride when Austin Dillon made the move to the Nationwide Series full-time for 2012. By the way, Ty Dillon was off winning an ARCA Series title last year while his brother was working on his truck crown.

In Truck Series competition , Dillon has posted top-10 finishes in all five races so far this year, including one top-five.

"Ty has shown a lot of progress so far this season in the Camping World Truck Series, and he's definitely earned the opportunity to make his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut," Childress said. "He'll be in very good hands with (crew chief) Ernie Cope and the No. 33 Chevrolet team."

The race at Dover may be Dillon's debut in the series, but the No. 33 has already been competing regularly on the Nationwide circuit this year. Drivers including Brendan Gaughan, Kevin Harvick and Paul Menard have combined to put the No. 33 fifth in car owner points.

Dillon will have a couple of teammates to lean on this weekend in the form of some series heavy-hitters. Veteran driver Elliott Sadler, who is second in the Nationwide Series championship points standings, will be behind the wheel of the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Sadler's a two-time winner in 2012. And then there's brother, Austin Dillon, in the No. 3 RCR Chevy. He currently occupies the third spot in points heading into Dover.

"It's going to be a lot of fun running with my brother Austin and Elliott," Dillon said. "The RCR Nationwide Series teams have done a great job so far this season, and I know I'll learn a lot from them."
