BUSCH EARNS THIRD CAREER RICHMOND NNS VICTORY
BUSCH DOMINATES TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN NOS COLORS
RICHMOND, Va. (May 1, 2009) - If the NASCAR Nationwide Series point battle comes down to a showdown between Kyle Busch and reigning champion Carl Edwards, Friday night's Lipton Tea 250 served as a precursor to a year-end grudge match.
This weekend, Kyle Busch came out the victor.
Busch held off Edwards in a final six-lap shootout for his third Nationwide Series win of the 2009 season. The victory was also Busch's third career win at Richmond International Raceway-the site of his first career Nationwide Series win-and the third-straight win in NOS Energy Drink livery. Since becoming a part-time primary sponsor of Busch in October 2008, NOS is undefeated in Nationwide Series competition.
After qualifying third and taking the lead on lap four, Busch pitted on lap 18 in the first attempt of ridding his Joe Gibbs Racing machine of a tight-handling condition. Also taking adjustments on laps 66 and 94, Busch and crew prepped his Toyota Camry for an impressive run to the finish.
Busch's last stand stemmed from the evening's final pit stop on lap 205 when crew chief Jason Ratcliff supplied the NOS Energy Drink Toyota Camry with four tires and a wedge adjustment to help alleviate what Busch described as handling condition that was "plowing in the center of the corner." It was evident that the change was spot-on as Busch roared back to the lead with 20 laps to go.
An accident by Kenny Wallace brought out the final yellow flag, which set up the final five-lap effort in which Busch pulled away from Edwards on the restart and scoring his 24th career series win by .584 seconds.
Busch's lead in the Nationwide Series point standings has expanded to 82 markers over second place Carl Edwards following Friday night's race.
KYLE'S QUOTES ON WINNING THE LIPTON TEA 250
What got you through to victory lane?
"Perseverance man, you've just got to keep digging. I really want to thank all these guys on this team. They do a phenomenal job week in and week out. I've just really got to thank NOS and Z-Line and the fans, Toyota, Marquis Jets, Gillette, DirecTV -- everybody that makes this program possible for us. All of the guys at Joe Gibbs Racing -- everybody from the fab shop to the cleanup crew to everybody that works so hard to really make it fun. I've got to thank J.D. and Joe (Gibbs) and those guys. I don't know what else to say, man, this is pretty fun here at Richmond. I love winning here. This is one of Denny's (Hamlin) favorite places, too. He always wins here so it's a hometown for him and unfortunately we didn't have another Nationwide car for him to run tonight so we had to make sure we won in his hometown."
Can you talk about the last pass to take the lead?
"It was on a restart there. (Carl Edwards) didn't come up through the gears very well for some reason. I faked low and went to the outside and just drove around him on the high-side. He gave me the space and I gave him some space so we could race clean and we made it around him and that was pretty much it."
