MCDOWELL BATTLES BACK IN HOMETOWN THROWDOWN

Phoenix, AZ. (April 19, 2009)- Michael McDowell battled adversity to finish 11th at the Bashas' Supermarkets 200 Friday night at the Phoenix International Raceway. The challenges began as the 24-year-old Phoenix native rolled off the grid 27th after a frustrating qualifying lap.

"Gene and the JTG Daugherty guys gave me a quick car off the truck. We just had a bad draw going out first and I overdrove turn three a bit," said McDowell.

Determined, McDowell moved his #47 Pacific Packaging Group Camry to 17th place only two laps into the event. On lap 28 a wreck blocked the racetrack, forcing McDowell to the apron. Due to a scoring mistake, NASCAR forced the McDowell to the 39th position.

"With the scoring loop misunderstanding, it put us in a hole to fight our way out of. I knew we had a good racecar, we just had to be patient," said McDowell.

A long green flag run of 61 laps strained McDowell's track position, eventually putting him a lap down. A lucky dog on lap 147 gave McDowell 47 laps to make a run for a top-10 finish. McDowell then began an on-track assault that climbed him to 14th place when a late race yellow flag forced a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart McDowell used up every inch of the racetrack to climb 3 more spots to finish 11th.

"We had a great race considering the adversity we overcame. We had great pit stops and definitely had a top-10 car, but with the long yellow flags at the end we didn't have the laps to break the top-10," said McDowell.
