NASCAR levied penalties on the No. 4 XFINITY Series and the No. 00 Craftsman Truck Series teams on Tuesday.
JD Motorsports violated the rule from Section 20.17.2.1: Overall vehicle weight, after a piece of tungsten flew off of the No. 4 Chevy driven by Ross Chastain and into the windshield of Jamie Dick's No. 55 Viva Motorsports car during practice at Iowa Speedway on Saturday. Not only did the steel weight destroy Dick's windshield, the impact damaged Dick's helmet as well.
The specific penalty comes under sub-section B: “Any and all ballast added to the vehicle must be bolted inside an added ballast container, inside the main frame rails, and/or inside the front sway bar mounting tube. Weight affixed improperly.”
The sanctioning body considers the infraction a P3 level penalty and fined crew chief Gary Cogswell $15,000. Cogswell and car chief Charles Kent are on probation until Dec. 31.
Chastain tweeted an apology following the incident.
JR Motorsports takes a hit
NASCAR also fined JR Motorsports crew chief Joe Shear Jr. $6,000 after the No. 00 Chevy failed post-race inspection following Friday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Kasey Kahne won the race, however the No. 00 Haas Automation Chevy was too low on both sides of the truck and too high in the right rear — a P2 penalty violating Section 20.17.3.3.2: Top Splitter Shelf Heights. "Vehicle did not meet the minimum post-race splitter height."
Shear is on probation through the end of the year. Team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. was docked 10 championship owner points.
