Joey Logano obviously likes Dover International Speedway as he said “This is my favorite race track!”
Joey Logano got his No. 22 Penske Racing Ford off pit road first during a caution that came out on lap 162 of the 200-lap 5-Hour Energy 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Dover (Del.) International Speedway on Saturday by taking only two tires and remained of front for the remainder of the race distance to claim the win. It was his third-straight series win at Dover, with the two previous coming with Joe Gibbs Racing.
"It's amazing to finally win for the Captain, Roger Penske," Logano said. "This is my favorite race track. I love coming up to the Northeast where I am from."
During the same caution, the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Brian Vickers and the No. 18 JGR Toyota of Matt Kenseth also took two and got off pit road in the second and third spots. They maintained those positions the rest of the way, even though Kenseth closed on Vickers and raced him hard for the runner-up spot in the closing laps.
"It was a great points day, but obviously, I really wanted to win," Vickers, a series regular, said.
The call to take two returned to Kenseth track position he lost when he stalled his car on pit road during a previous caution.
"We had a decent GameStop Toyota, but we got it better and gained with that two-tire stop at the end," Kenseth said.
The No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Kyle Busch was the race leader prior to the caution on lap 162 during which several drivers took two tires. Busch, though, took four and, as a result, restarted the race in the 10th spot. Crew chief Adam Stevens wanted Busch to stay out on the race track under the caution, but Busch made the call to pit for four.
Logano's crew chief, Jeremy Bullins, also was originally planning to put four tires on the No. 22, but when he saw other teams taking only two, he changed the call.
"Jeremy made a great call on that," Logano said. "The call was four, and he watched a couple of cars come down pit road and he said, 'Two, two, two, two.' The pit crew did a great job changing the plan and getting us in clean air, and it was up to me to hold them off."
According to Bullins, the only way to win the race was to do something different than Busch.
"I don't think we had anything for the 54, we just had to get off sequence from him," Bullins said.
In the closing laps, Busch was able to make his way up to the top-five to finish fifth. Right in front of Busch was the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford of Trevor Bayne in fourth. Bayne also took two tires for track position during the lap 162 caution.
"That two-tire stop got us in the game, there," Bayne said. "We need that to get some track position. We're going to work on our qualifying efforts, so we don't have to do that."
After the No. 5 JR Motorsports Chevrolet of Kasey Kahne and Busch restarted first and second following a lap 112 caution, Busch and Kahne were mainstays up front. But like Busch, Kahne also took four tires late in the race and wound up back in the field on a restart. Kahne made his way back up to the sixth position by the checkered flag.
Finishing seventh through 10th were the No. 12 Penske Racing Ford of Sam Hornish Jr., the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet of pole sitter Austin Dillon, the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet of Regan Smith and the No. 32 Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet of Kyle Larson.
