LADY LUCK DOWN ON TOWNLEY IN LAS VEGAS
Las Vegas, NV (3/1/09) - Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender, John Wes Townley and the No. 09 RAB Racing team encountered multiple mishaps in their Las Vegas Motor Speedway debut resulting in a 38th-place finish in the Sam's Town 300 Saturday afternoon.
Halfway through the final practice on Friday, Townley hit the wall in turn four, forcing the team to pull out a back-up car. With no further practice before qualifying, the No. 09 team settled for a
41st-place qualifying effort.
Townley, however quickly made work of the cars in front of him and was sitting 35th when the first caution was waved on lap six. Crew chief, Brad Parrott called the No. 09 machine down pit road for a track bar adjustment and fuel. Townley would restart 28th.
The 19-year-old rookie was able to stay out of trouble through the next two caution periods and was up to the 20th position before a restart on lap 25. As Townley was entering turn four, a car got underneath him causing the air to be taken off his spoiler, ultimately sending the Zaxby's Ford Fusion into the turn four wall. Townley would finish the caution plagued event in the 38th position.
"This is so unfortunate for the Zaxby's Racing team," said Townley. "We didn't have much luck on our side this weekend, but things started turning around during the race. We were running really well and staying out of trouble; the wrecks were happening in front of us and we were able to avoid them, but unfortunately we became one of them. We will regroup from this and see what we can do in Bristol."
RAB Racing will take two weeks off before heading to Bristol Motor Speedway for the Scotts Turf Builder 200 on Saturday, March 21st.
