Edwards notches pole for Nationwide 300 in Las Vegas

After claiming a third-place starting spot on Friday for Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, Carl Edwards turned in a lap in his NASCAR Nationwide Series car on Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway good enough to start Saturday afternoon's Sam's Town 300 race in that series from the pole position.

With only 43 cars attempting qualifying runs on Saturday for the Nationwide event, all cars attempting to qualify for Saturday afternoon's race received starting positions. None-the-less, drivers still battled for the best-possible starting spots on the grid and pit selection.

After finding himself at or near the top of the rundown following all four Nationwide practice sessions on Thursday and Friday, Las Vegas native Kyle Busch qualified second to start Saturday's race alongside Edwards on the front row.

Edwards' two Roush Fenway Racing teammates, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Trevor Bayne, also earned top-10 starting spots, with Stenhouse Jr. claiming third and Bayne seventh. From his third-place starting spot on the inside of the second row, Stenhouse Jr. will start the race the closest to the front of all drivers earning championship points in Nationwide Series competition. The next closest will be Elliott Sadler, who'll start from the sixth spot.

"Over the years, we've had more success at Las Vegas than most places," Roush Fenway Racing owner Jack Roush said. "We still think tha tone of our team strengths, after two decades, is our performance at the mile-and-a- half race tracks."

RFR does have five Nationwide Series wins at LVMS, but not have come from Edwards, Stenhouse Jr. or Bayne. Edwards, has won there in a Sprint Cup car, though.

Kevin Harvick will mark the 300th Nationwide Series start for his self- owned Kevin Harvick Inc. team when he takes the green flag from the fourth starting position. Another Sprint Cup Series regular, Mark Martin, will roll off fifth.

Current Nationwide Series points leader Reed Sorenson will start Saturday's race from the eighth spot. Denny Hamlin, who was the last driver to make a qualifying run, will start ninth, and Justin Allgaier will round out the top-10 as the field takes the green flag at approximately 3 p.m. ET for the Sam's Town 300. Allgaier's former teammate and reigning series champion, Brad Keselowski, will start 11th.
