This Week's Zaxby's Chevrolet at Darlington ... Clint Bowyer will drive Chassis No. 077 in this weekend's Royal Purple 200 presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts at Darlington Raceway. RCR drivers have competed with this Chevrolet on three previous occasions, all in 2009. Jeff Burton finished ninth in this car at Michigan International Speedway in August, Stephen Leight finished 31st at Kentucky Speedway in June after his engine overheated, and Burton posted a ninth-place finish after starting ninth at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May.
Double Duty ... Following Friday's Royal Purple 200 presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts, Bowyer will compete in Saturday's Showtime Southern 500 in the No. 33 Hartford Chevrolet.
What makes Darlington such a difficult racetrack?
"Darlington is a driver's racetrack. It's the type of place that tests your skills each and every lap. It's very challenging because the track conditions change quickly there, especially as the tires wear down, so a driver has to be able to adapt to changes. It's really important to have a fast car if you want to be able to pass. It's just one of those places. It's too tough to tame-the name says it all. It's been a decent track for us, but we just haven't had any luck. We sat on the pole there in the Cup Series and have run well but we haven't been able to put it all together so hopefully this will be the year."
Do you find it helpful to spend the race weekend transitioning between NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars at Darlington?
"The Nationwide cars and the Sprint Cup cars are extremely different but, from my perspective, additional track time is helpful no matter what type of car you are in. Darlington is one of the most challenging tracks we go to but it's a fun track so I enjoy running both series."
Do you enjoy running the No. 21 Zaxby's Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nationwide Series?
"I'm having a lot of fun with the Zaxby's guys. Hopefully we can keep that going, even on into next year. I like to run Nationwide. It's an important part of our sport. The series is always very competitive and it has great racers and great racing in it so hopefully we can be a part of that with the Zaxby's Chevrolet for many years to come."
Mother's Day is on Sunday. How involved has your mother been in your racing career?
"I remember racing motorcycles with my two brothers and mom being there for us the whole time. Motorcross is a dirty sport. I remember the mud races and mom would be going back and forth to the dry cleaners and keeping our gear washed. It was a nightmare when we were all three racing. That was when we were four, five and six years old and she has been there ever since."
