MISFORTUNE LEAVES JOHN WES TOWNLEY AND RAB RACING WITH A 27TH PLACE FINISH AT CHARLOTTE
CONCORD, NC (10/13/08) John Wes Townley and the No. 09 RAB Racing team encountered a multitude of misfortunes in their "Queen City" debut at Lowe's Motor Speedway, resulting in a 27th-place finish in the Dollar General 300 on Friday night.
On Thursday, the 18-year-old rookie took his first laps around the 1.5-mile oval and posted the 32nd fastest speed during the team's first practice session. Then, due to rain, final practice was rescheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday morning. The No. 09 machine posted the 35th-fastest time in final practice.
With 53 cars attempting to make the 43 car field, John Wes Townley knew he would be forced to make the field on time. After posting a first lap of 30.372 seconds (177.795 mph), which was good enough to make the field, Townley lost control of the No. 09 machine on lap two, forcing the team to bring out a back-up car. The Watkinsville, GA native would start his first career race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in the 43rd position.
The green flag waved just past 8:00 p.m. and Townley made quick work of the cars ahead of him and was sitting in the 26th position when the evening's third caution flew at lap 50 for debris. Four fresh Goodyear tires, fuel, a wedge adjustment and removal of a spring rubber were in order for Townley as the crew sent the Zaxby's/SPS Ford Fusion out in the 28th position.
Five laps later, Townley radioed in that he had a "huge vibration". Crew chief, Blake Bainbridge chose to bring the No. 09 machine down pit road under green for four tires. It was then that the team realized there was a loose right-front wheel. Unfortunately, Townley was also penalized by NASCAR for speeding on pit road. The No. 09 would make his way back down pit road for a pass through penalty on lap 60. Townley rejoined the pack in the 35th-position, five laps down to the leaders.
One red flag for rain, eight caution periods and 3 pit stops later, Townley managed to find his way up to his highest position of the race, 25th.
With just under 10 laps to go in the 200-mile event, Townley found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time when he fell victim to a five-car incident on the frontstretch.
The team would finish in the 27th position in their first NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
After enjoying a weekend off, Townley and the No. 09 RAB Racing team will head to Memphis Motorsports Park for the Kroger on Track for the Cure 250 presented by the Southern Dodge Dealers. Live coverage of the event will be televised on ESPN Classic Saturday, October 25, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The race will also be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
