Record Field Set For Speed & Sound Weekend
Watkins Glen, NY (July 4, 2001) - With the new engine set-up in this year's NASCAR Busch Series, chances are some records could be broken during Watkins Glen International's Festival of Speed & Sound weekend. One record already broken is the number of cars entered in the weekend's Historic Stock Car Racing Association (HSCRA) event. A record field highlights rounds five and six of the HSCRA's inaugural season. Thirty-five cars are set to take the green at legendary Watkins Glen International as part of the July 6-8 weekend. Also slated for the weekend is the inaugural ARCA RE/MAX Series 150, running alongside the GNC Live Well 200 NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division race.
Gene Felton will be looking to continue his four race win streak this weekend but will be facing stiff competition from the record 35-car field. Felton, who is a former IMSA champion and Trans-Am winner, will be driving a 1993 Kendall Motor Oil sponsored Pontiac Grand Prix, originally driven by Kenny Wallace.
His toughest competition will come from London native, Chris Hall, who while in England raced and won against the likes of Eddie Irvine and Damon Hill. Hall, who now resides in Demorest, GA, is a lead instructor at the Panoz Racing School and a former NASCAR Goody's Dash and Daytona 24 hour competitor. He will be driving a 1993 Budweiser sponsored, Junior Johnson-built, Bill Elliott-driven, Ford Thunderbird
HSCRA, in conjunction with the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA), is hosting a ten-race championship for pre-1994 stock cars in their original sponsor livery and configuration.
"We are extremely pleased with our 2001 season," stated Joe Fox, Executive Director of HSCRA. "We had a great field at Sebring and at Road Atlanta, we had a record field. Now we have the largest gathering of historic stock cars ever at our biggest event. Our involvement with SVRA, a great driver line up and our supporting event with NASCAR at The Glen give us a strong inaugural season on which to build."
The Glen presents an unsurpassed NASCAR weekend July 6-8. The Festival of Speed & Sound promises to be a weekend packed with racing action as the ARCA RE/MAX Series takes to the historic road course in its inaugural race at The Glen on Saturday, followed by a concert by Blessid Union of Souls and a Winston Cup Pepsi 400 viewing party on the jumbotrons live from Daytona International Speedway. The NASCAR Busch Grand National Series takes center stage on Sunday as the highlight of the weekend's activities in the GNC Live Well 200, complemented by a historic stock car race in the morning.
