HARRISBURG, NC (August 10, 1999) -- Tyler Jet Motorsports dipped into the open wheel ranks to sign one of that divisions brightest stars inking Tyler Walker to a contract earlier today. The first step of the agreement will take Walker from behind the wheel of a World of Outlaws sprint car to a seat in a NASCAR Busch Grand National stock car for a pair of races later this season. "We've been looking around at a lot of different drivers for our new Busch Grand National team," stated Tyler Jet Motorsports team owner Tim Beverley. "Tyler's name kept coming up quite a bit. Despite the fact hes only 20, Tyler has accomplished a lot in his racing career. We wanted a young driver to grow with our young team and Tyler fit the bill perfectly." "This is a dream come true for me," said Walker, who made his sprint car debut at the tender age of 16 after winning four California state go kart championships. "I've had a great learning experience in the World of Outlaws, but like most drivers these days, NASCAR is where I want to wind up. To get this opportunity with Tyler Jet Motorsports this early in my career is more than I ever expected." Walker burst on to the World of Outlaws scene in 1998 finishing second in the Rookie of the Year chase. The North Hills, CA. native finished 11th in the season point standings on the strength of 31 Top-10 finishes. This season, Walker has proven to be even better scoring two victories and 29 Top-10 finishes in the 50 WOO tour races to date. He has also posted quick time at six 1999 events and is currently seventh in the season standings. "We've had a great year so far," said Walker. "We hope to close it out with a few more wins and a jump to the Top-5 in points. Signing this deal with Tyler Jet Motorsports will be a real confidence booster for me and the rest of my team. I cant wait to get started." Walker has had limited pavement racing experience behind the wheel of an American Speed Association car at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Walker qualified 27th and was running 11th when a mechanical problem cut short the solid effort. Walker will test extensively with the Tyler Jet BGN unit before debuting in the inaugural Grand National race at Phoenix (AZ) International Raceway, Nov. 6. Walker will also be behind the wheel of the Tyler Jet BGN mount when that series heads for Miami (FL) Homestead Speedway Nov. 13. "We will give Tyler every opportunity to be successful," said Beverley, who indicated the organization will make a sponsorship announcement for the new team later this year. "We're also thinking about getting Tyler some ARCA starts, perhaps at Charlotte in October. Tyler's the kind of driver we can see moving into a full-time Busch Grand National seat in the near future and as one of our team drivers in Winston Cup down the road. This is a very exciting time for Tyler Walker and for Tyler Jet Motorsports." Tyler Jet Motorsports currently fields the 10-10-345 Pontiac for Rich Bickle in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. The team is located in a 45,000 square foot race facility in Harrisburg, NC.
