Two-Time Champion Larry Pearson Returns To NASCAR Busch Series Racing

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --- Larry Pearson has been counting the days until he makes his return to NASCAR Busch Series racing. With the first lap at Daytona International Speedway under his belt, Pearson's expectations become reality and the rest is sure to be history. Pearson has been on hiatus from the racing community, be he hasn't strayed very far. Pearson has kept a continuous watch on the competition, partially through the eyes of his brothers, Ricky and Eddie, who worked for the emerging powerhouse of Buckshot Racing for the past three years. Now Pearson finds himself at one of the best positions in his career, driver of the No. 00 Buckshot Racing Cheez-It Pontiac for the 1999 season. "I am extremely excited as I look ahead to what could happen this year," said Pearson. "This is the best Busch car I've been in in a long time and I have a lot of confidence in my team. Kenneth Campbell will be my crew chief and my two brothers, Ricky and Eddie, will play a major part in the team. "I have been waiting a long time for a chance like this and I think 1999 will prove to be one of the most competitive years in the history of the series, and hopefully in my career. I'm looking for big things to happen." Pearson won his first Busch Series championship in 1986 and followed that up with a second title in 1987. He has 15 victories to his name as well as 11 pole positions, 78 top fives and 127 top 10s. To top off his lengthy resume, Pearson has one of the most famous last names in the history of auto racing. But Pearson knows there is a fresh field of drivers he will compete against in 1999 and it will take a lot of hard work to maintain his winning status. "The Buckshot Racing Cheez-It Pontiac will be a strong competitor, but going up against some of these young drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth will be tough," Pearson said. "This series has become a great mixture of younger and more experienced drivers working together to make the series as exciting as it can be. I may have some of these younger drivers asking me for advice, but I may be going to them with questions myself." Being a past champion, Pearson holds a special regard for the NASCAR Busch Series and said he is excited about all the changes taking place within the series. For the first time, Pearson will race on the west coast three times in one season. "I am thrilled with the expansion of the NASCAR Busch Series and the changes that are taking place," Pearson said. "I think this series is finally receiving the recognition it deserves and should have received several years ago. Traveling out west and racing in Las Vegas, California and Phoenix is a giant step for the Busch Series and I can't wait to get there." In addition to all of the changes taking place and the increased competition, Pearson can't wait to once again be on the same team with his brothers. Ricky will serve as general manager for the Winston Cup and Busch Series operations and Eddie will help prepare the Busch Series cars as well as change tires on race day. "I had a lot of success in the past working with my family," said Pearson. "Working out of my dad's shop again and teaming up with Ricky and Eddie is going to be exciting. I'm anxious to see what kind of results we can produce as a team. Buckshot laid a solid foundation for this Busch program before he moved to Winston Cup and I am looking for the Buckshot Racing team to continue to build on that knowledge." Larry Pearson has set high expectations for himself and the Buckshot Racing team for his return to competition. But with two championships to his credit, a proven race team and two brothers in the pits on race day, expect the results to be nothing less than spectacular.
