PHILLIPS 66/TROP ARTIC RACE REPORT PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY JULY 24, 1999
Todd Bodine exercised patience during the early laps of the NAPA Autocare 250. The Phillips 66 Chevy maintained its 15th position for about the first 30 laps. Despite a loose handling condition on the Phillips 66 Chevy, Bodine started making his move to the front, moving into the top 10 on lap 40. The first caution waved on lap 46. Bodine was in 10th place on the lap 52 restart. Caution number two waved on lap 63 while Bodine was running in eighth place. During the caution, Bodine made a pit stop for an air pressure and track bar adjustment, four tires and fuel. Because only the leaders made stops during the second caution, Bodine was in 17th place on the restart at lap 67. Bodine quickly made his move and was back in the top 10 by lap 72. After making the first five laps, Bodine reported that the Phillips 66 Chevy was tight coming off the turns. Despite the ill-handling condition, Bodine continued moving forward and was in the top five by lap 92. The third caution waved on lap 95. Bodine was in fifth place on the restart on lap 101. By lap 127, Bodine reported that the Phillips 66 Chevy had developed a vibration in the left front. Despite the problem with the car, Bodine stayed out during the fourth caution, but came in for a track bar adjustment, four tires and fuel during the fifth caution at lap 160. Again, only the leaders made pit stops which put Bodine in 19th place on the restart at lap 165. Although the Phillips 66 Chevy's tight handling condition persisted, Bodine climbed back in the top 10 by lap 180. Bodine was in sixth place when the sixth caution waved on lap 224. The event returned to green flag racing on lap 229 and Bodine moved into the top five on lap 233. The sixth caution waved on lap 240 when Bodine and the fourth place machine of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. got together between turns one and two. Bodine escaped the accident without damage and took over fourth place. The event restarted on lap 246. On the last lap of the race, Bodine beat Jeff Green to the finish line to end the day in third place.
TODD BODINE COMMENTS: "This was an exciting race to the finish. This is my first time visiting this facility. It's a great race track with room for lots of side-by-side racing. We had a lot of Phillips 66 people in the stands today and we sure would have liked to get the win for them, but we're pretty happy with third. We didn't have the best handling race car today, but it was a good race for us and Phillips 66."
