TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 26, 1997) Quotes from the top finishers in the Birmingham Automobile Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare.:
Winner Mark Martin No. 60 Winn-Dixie Ford
"I didn't think we had the car to win here today. The tires were great. We didn't have to stop at all. We did stop one time, but we didn't have to. Steve Park was doing a great job back there. That wasn't Steve Park in there. I knew that was Dale Earnhardt driving that car. I'm happy for Tony Eury. He's got a good young driver. We tied the record. Now we've got one more to go to break it. But there are no guarantees in this sport. Like I've said before, you never know if you're ever going to win one of these things again. But I'm really proud of this team. I have to thank Jack Roush and this whole team. I owe it all to them. I didn't see anything that will help us tomorrow. Today is today and tomorrow is tomorrow. But we've been running good in the Winston Cup car. I owe all this to Jack Roush and this team. They've given me great cars and we've had a lot of success together. I'm just proud of the whole team."
Second-place Steve Park No. 3 ACDelco Chevrolet
"This Chevrolet Monte Carlo was really hauling today. We made some good calls in the pits, just putting right-side tires on and then coming in for a splash of gas. We were able to get out of the pits there and run with Mark for a while. I was giving it all I had there at the end. He was just using up a lot of race track. We tried everything in the book to get by Mark, but he was just a little bit to strong. We tried the high line and the low line. We even tried to go through the infield. He was just too strong. "Our spotters talked, and Shane Hall was going to go with me, but every time I came off the corner, it seemed like Shane couldn't run with us off the corners. I couldn't get a good run on Mark. "Dale was telling me to pass em. He was on the radio and he was giving me some good pointers on how to get off the corners and try to get hooked up with the car behind me. We tried everything we could, but it wasn't enough for Mark."
Third-place Jeff Green No. 8 Diamond Ridge Motorsports Chevrolet
"It was a good run. I think we had them right where we needed them, but I stalled on pit row and we lost half a straightaway to them. I just couldn't get back up there to them. I was riding around really, just hanging on waiting for the end, hoping that we would have a move for them."
Fourth-place Kyle Petty No. 49 NWO Pontiac
"We really had a good run. I got in that wreck, I don't know what happened with that. There were a lot of us slamming on our brakes and spinning around. I got hit in the rear and spun around a little bit and that kind of messed me up. But, the good Lord was looking after us. I think he knew the pit strategy better than we do, because that put me at the back of the pack. Todd made the call to come in and top off before we went back to green and that put us on a totally different pit strategy. These guys drove the best race I've ever seen the Busch guys drive."
Fifth-place Tim Fedewa No. 33 Kleenex Chevrolet
"We didn't have that great of a race car, I mean the car was handling great and everything, we just didn't seem to get up to speed. We had some mechanical problems under the hood, but we got them fixed. We got off sequence a little bit, and that's probably the best thing that happened to us all day. I'm happy for these guys because they give me a great car."
