FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Jan. 9, 2001) - Ryan Newman is expecting to accomplish many things in his inaugural NASCAR Busch Series season in 2001. Newman demonstrated his Alltel Ford's team strength during two days of testing that concluded Tuesday at Texas Motor Speedway in preparation for the March 31 Texas 300.

Newman will be piloting the first full-season Busch Series effort for owners Roger Penske, Rusty Wallace and Don Miller who field Winston Cup teams for Wallace and Jeremy Mayfield. Assisting the team during the Texas test was former Winston Cup star and television commentator Buddy Baker.

Newman completed various phases during the two days of testing including race and qualifying configurations. Unofficial reports had Newman above the 184.451 mph Busch Series track record set last season by Jason Leffler.

"This is the opportunity of a lifetime," Newman said in between practice sessions. "The chance to be associated with Roger Penske and Rusty Wallace is what I have been working for my entire career. Our test session went very well, we are pleased with the results."

"Ryan is a special driver that I've really enjoyed working with," Baker said. "He's fast and learns quickly. His future in stock car racing is very bright."

Newman and one of the toughest fields of NASCAR Busch Series drivers will compete in the March 31 Texas 300, annually among the richest races on the circuit. Tickets for the Texas 300 are on sale at the speedway ticket office, by calling (817) 215-8500 or at area Ticketmaster locations.
