Veteran road racer Scott Pruett gave the Matrix Motorsports team plenty of reasons to smile in the GNC Live Well 200 NASCAR Busch Grand National race at Watkins Glen International.
Driving the No. 71 State Fair Brand Corn Dogs Ford Taurus owned by Kevin and Donna Lepage, Pruett captured the pole position on Saturday and then turned in an eighth-place performance in Sunday's race.
The pole was the first for the Lepages as car owners, as well as the first for Cosworth Engines and State Fair Brand Corn Dogs.
Pruett ran with the leaders at the 2.45-mile road course despite battling brake problems throughout the race. The Lepages were pleased with the performance of their race team.
Kevin Lepage, owner
"We had a real good race weekend sitting on the pole position and bringing the No. 71 State Fair Brand Corn Dogs/Ballpark Franks Ford home in the eighth spot. This was the first pole for Cosworth Engines. It was also the first pole for me and Donna as car owners. It was a pretty awesome feeling to sit up on the pit cart and watch Scott Pruett maneuver around the road course.
"We had brake problems early in the race. I just told Scott that we had a long way to go, just try to do the best that he could. He did a tremendous job saving the brakes and giving our team a top-10 finish.
"State Fair Brand Corn Dogs and Ball Park Franks will not return as our sponsors next year. Matrix Motorsports is doing all it can do to find sponsors to run a limited schedule for the remainder of this season with Scott Pruett behind the wheel. The team is also searching for sponsorship, either limited or full time, to run next season. Ideally, we would like to find a full time deal for next year so that we can run the entire schedule and compete in the points run.
"I want to step down and just be a car owner in the Busch Series. I want to be able to concentrate fully on my Winston Cup efforts with Morgan-McClure Motorsports. We have been fairly successful this season with Matrix and would like to continue on with our race program."
Scott Pruett, driver
"I am excited about putting the No. 71 Matrix Motorsports entry on the pole for Kevin and Donna (Lepage). They are a great bunch of people. It is impressive to be able to do this with a team that only has six full time employees.
"The program to drive at Watkins Glen came together at the last minute. The State Fair Brand Corn Dogs Taurus was terrific all day long.
"Our brakes began overheating early. Kevin told me to try to take care of everything and it would hopefully be alright. The brakes continually deteriorated. They would cool down during cautions enough to work when I really needed them.
"The last time I raced at Watkins Glen was in 1994 in the Trans-Am Series. It was fun to go back and race the track. I really enjoy driving the road courses.
"This was the first pole for Cosworth Engines and for Matrix Motorsports. Kevin and Donna are actively hunting for a sponsor to run the No. 71 next year. We might get together, if we can get something worked out. "I would like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to drive at Watkins Glen. We will see what transpires in the future."
