Parsons Racing teams with ALLTEL, ST Motorsports By Dave Rodman
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 14, 1998) ALLTEL, which has been an associate sponsor of the ST Motorsports NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division team for the past two seasons, will be the primary sponsor of the No. 10 Parsons Racing Chevrolet driven by the veteran Phil Parsons, in 1999.
In addition, Parsons, a two-time winner on the NASCAR Busch Series who has made a late-season rush at the top-five in the NASCAR Busch Series point standings, said his team would share development and testing information with ST Motorsports, which currently runs the No. 59 Kingsford/Matchlight Chevrolet for NASCAR Winston Cup driver Robert Pressley.
"This is not a merger, but we're going to have a working arrangement with ST Motorsports to share information and test data," Parsons said. "I really have to thank Tad Geschickter at ST Motorsports for bringing our team together with ALLTEL.
"To be associated with a company of this stature is great for our team. Last night, a lot of exciting announcements were made regarding the future of the NASCAR Busch Series and we're pleased at Phil Parsons Racing to be able to be in a position to take advantage of that growth in conjunction with ALLTEL."
Dave Atkins, operations vice president for ALLTEL and a former National Football League offensive lineman, said in the press conference at the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex that the deal was for "one year with an option in the middle of the year."
"We have a good group of our people here from Little Rock, Arkansas, which is ALLTEL's base, and they are really excited about becoming more involved in NASCAR racing," Atkins said. "To actually come to a race and just feel the excitement that radiates from this sport is a pretty big deal and we're thrilled by this association."
The team sponsorship agreement follows the announcement two weeks ago of the inaugural ALLTEL 200 NASCAR Busch Series race at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham on Feb. 20, 1999.
Parsons began racing in the NASCAR Busch Series in 1982. He formed his own team owned by his wife, Marcia, in 1994. It has finished in the top-10 in the point standings each of the last four years.
"It's hard not to be excited about working with ALLTEL next year," Parsons said. "I've been fortunate to work with some great sponsors in the past, but ALLTEL comes into this sport with a lot of enthusiasm. It's hard not be excited about being part of a situation that will help my race team move to that next level - the top level - with a sponsor that's totally committed to being a big part of this sport."
