NASCAR announces penalties

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 17, 1998)NASCAR officials announced Wednesday they have levied a penalty of $5,000 against NASCARBusch Series Grand National Division driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., $2,500 against Earnhardt's crew chief Tony Eury Sr., and $1,000 against Bryant Frazier, crew chief for Tony Stewart. In addition tothe penalties, all three have been placed on probation for 90 days.

The fines are the result of an off-track incident -- an altercation in the garage area -- following Sunday's Lycos.com 250 at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.

Frazier and Eury were penalized for violation of Section 12, Rule 4,Article A in the 1998 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division Rule Book: "Actions detrimental to auto racing."

Earnhardt's penalty was a result of a violation of 12-4 A and Section12, Rule 4, Article F, which prohibits fighting in the pits, garage, track orrace premises.

Earnhardt's No. 3 ACDelco Chevrolet and Stewart's No. 44 Shell Oil Pontiac made contact several times during the event, leading to theconfrontation following the race.

The NASCAR Busch Series' next event is the Lysol 200 on June 28 onthe Watkins Glen International road course.
