Joe Nemecheck placed his NEMCO Motorsports' Pontiac on the pole for the NASCAR Busch Series race at Daytona International Speedway. Nemecheck repeated what Jeff Green did Monday for the Winston Cup pole by knocking the favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. off the top position. Winner of the 2002 July race, Nemecheck did a lap at 186.050 mph.

"We're very fortunate to have success on the superspeedway race tracks," stated owner/driver Nemechek. "Here and in Talladega."

Earnhardt Jr. at 185.586 will start in the front row for the Busch race as the defending winner from the 2002 season opener. Last year Earnhardt Jr. won driving for Richard Childress Racing. For the 2003 season, Earnhardt Jr. will enter selected Busch races in a car co-owned by his step-mom, Theresa Earnhardt and himself.

"We picked up quite a bit in qualifying," Earnhardt Jr. said. "I'm real happy with the lap we had and the car.

Chevy driver Kevin Harvick was third fastest of the qualifying session at 185.468 mph. Harvick who has the busiest schedule at Daytona commented, "Now that qualifying is over, I'll be able to rest a little easier at night."

Fourth on the grid will be Mike McLaughlin in the top Ford at 185.452 mph. "This has been a roller coaster ride lately," stated McLaughlin. "We've been to the bottom and we're digging our way back out. I've got an awesome group of people; I just wish I could have kept them for the whole year."

CART Champ Car World Series driver Jimmy Vasser has shown his speed during testing and practice sessions in a Dodge will start from the fifth position (185.280mph).

Rounding out the top ten were Matt Kenseth, Michael Waltrip, Ron Hornaday, Chad Blount, and Mike Bliss.
