Menard Scores Top NASCAR Busch Finish of the Season At Nazareth's Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200
NAZARETH, Pa. (Sunday, May 23, 2004) -- Paul Menard scored the best finish of his official NASCAR Busch Series Raybestos Rookie season today, bringing his #33 Menards/Pittsburgh Paints Chevrolet of Andy Petree Racing home in 13th place in the Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200 at Nazareth Speedway.
The 23-year-old from Eau Claire, Wis., qualified 18th and quickly found himself up in 14th place by the end of the first lap around the mile oval here. He ran as high as 12th on Lap 59, and again on Lap 93 of today's 200-lap race. Excellent pit work by the Menards/PPG Chevrolet team on yellow stops on Laps 73 and 146 kept Menard in contention for his first top-10 finish of the season. A slight understeer during his final 54-lap run hindered his ability to move up further in the order. Menard's previous best finish this season was 14th place at Texas Motor Speedway in April. His career best NASCAR Busch Series finish was ninth at Indianapolis Raceway Park last August.
Martin Truex, Jr., won his fourth race in 12 tries this season with a last-lap pass of Bobby Hamilton, Jr.
The next event on the 2004 NASCAR Busch Series tour is next Saturday at Charlotte.
"All in all a good day for the Menards/PPG team. It was our best finish of the season and it came thanks to some great pit work and a pretty solid race car. We were just a little loose during our first run. We made a (tire) pressure adjustment on our first stop and that helped a lot. The last set of tires made us just a little tight, so we did the best we could. We're creeping up on our first top-10 finish this year. Once that happens, I hope it opens the floodgates for us. We had a good test at Charlotte a couple of weeks ago and I think we'll be ready give it a go on Saturday."
