CLERMONT, IN (August 3, 2001) - When it rains, it pours. Nothing could have been closer to the truth for Ted Musgrave and his No. 1 Mopar Performance Parts Dodge Ram Friday under the lights at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
After running solidly in the Top-10 for the better part of the Power Stroke 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at IRP, Musgrave's night was cut short when contact with another truck produced a broken radiator dashing any hopes the Franklin, WI driver had of winning.
"Short track fireworks at IRP," explained Musgrave after the 23rd-place finish. "I kind of predicted that this was going to happen. When the cautions come out and everyone gets bunched up, it gets pretty hairy out there and that's what happened to us. We got caught up with another truck, got turned around and knocked the radiator out of the Mopar Dodge. We had to spend six laps behind the wall fixing it. We're trying to finish some races and get some points, but it's just not turning out that way right now."
Musgrave started 10th in the 36-truck field and picked up three spots by the time the caution flag waved on the 20th-circuit when teammate Scott Riggs headed for pit road with mechanical difficulties. By Lap 46, Musgrave had battled his way to sixth place despite battling a tight handling condition that plagued the Mopar Dodge driver throughout most of the race.
"We were tight all weekend," said Musgrave. "The guys worked hard to try and free the truck up, but we never found what we were looking for. I think we know why, so that's a new project we need to get taken care of. "
Musgrave carefully threaded his way through the competition narrowly missing several incidents until disaster struck on Lap 127.
"The Mopar Dodge was good tonight," Musgrave stated. "I don't think we had anything for the leaders, but we could have gotten a decent Top-10 finish. The guys have been working real hard and my favorite truck will be ready for the next race at Nashville, so we'll bounce back. We just need some good luck."
The IRP finish earned Musgrave $8140 in prize money and kept him sixth in the 2001 NCTS championship chase, 192 points out of the top spot with nine races remaining.
The Federated Auto Parts 200 at Nashville Superspeedway will take the green flag Friday, August 10 at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The race will be telecast live on ESPN and broadcast on MRN Radio worldwide.
