ROCKINGHAM, NC -- With his $28,525 payday at the NAPA 300, Mike "Magic Shoes" McLaughlin became only the third member of the $3,000,000 NASCAR Busch Series career winnings club. McLaughlin joins Randy Lajoie and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the exclusive club.
"I can't really take much credit for reaching the $3,000,000 mark," said McLaughlin. "It's a tribute to people like Anheuser-Busch, NASCAR and the racing fans that support our series. Without all their support and leadership, none of us would be able to race for the amounts of money that we see each week."
McLaughlin has competed in the NASCAR Busch Series full-time since 1994. Prior to 1994, McLaughlin made 20 starts between 1984-1992. McLaughlin has recorded five victories, 41 top-fives, and 72 top-tens in 192 starts.
"I have been really lucky to always race for great teams," McLaughlin said. "The six years I spent with Cicci-Welliver Racing gave me the chance to race up front and win some large purses. With the team George deBidart is putting together for me this year, I believe I can continue to run up front."
McLaughlin's largest purse in his career ($61,700) occurred at Lowe's Motor Speedway in October of 1998 when he captured the checkered flag. In 1998, McLaughlin recorded his highest winnings total in any one year, $828,313.
"Back when I first started racing in Waterloo, NY, the thought never even crossed my mind that I would be able to make a living doing what I love, racing cars," McLaughlin said. "We should all thank NASCAR and the racing fans every day for giving us the opportunity."
Mike McLaughlin will look to add to his winnings this Saturday at North Carolina Speedway. Racing action begins at 1:00pm.
