McFarland realizes a goal at 180 mph

Daytona Beach, Fla (January 21, 2006) -- Mark McFarland set many goals for himself when he began racing go-karts at the age of eight. Prior to the year 2006 he had been able to cross many off his list. As he strapped himself behind the wheel of his No. 88 Navy Chevrolet yesterday at Daytona International Speedway he was able to put a check mark beside a goal that has remained fresh in his memory for a long time.

"In my go-kart days we would always come down to Kart Week in Daytona, which was the Daytona 500 of dirt-track kart racing," said McFarland. "I always dreamed of testing or racing on the big oval down the street."

Testing gets a check.

McFarland is in Daytona participating in a three day test for the Hershey's Kissables 300 season opener for the NASCAR Busch Series. The team is brand new to the series, which means McFarland has to qualify for the race on time. With the crew that JR Motorsports has assembled around him he should easily be able to check off racing at Daytona as well.

"I have a learning curve to go through for restrictor plate racing, no doubt about it," sounded McFarland. "But having Rich Hubbs (crew chief) and Wes Ward (team consultant) with their experience, along with the best restrictor plate driver on the planet as my car owner is a huge benefit. Our Navy Monte Carlo with our Richard Childress Racing motors should be plenty fast during qualifying"

You can bet there are a few more goals McFarland has set for himself and it remains only a matter of time before his list is complete.

About the Navy

The Navy has used its association with NASCAR over the past two years to increase America's awareness of the opportunities to serve our great country. We are very excited about further increasing our awareness through NASCAR in 2006 by an association with JR Motorsports as they exemplify Navy's commitment to grow and develop quality young Sailors through service in the Navy.
