NAVY RACING BRINGS BIG GUNS TO LAS VEGAS
The Dale Earnhardt Jr owned NAVY #88 NASCAR Busch Series racecar and Driver, Mark McFarland, competed in the Sam's Town 300 in Las Vegas on Saturday.
The team, which finished 27th after starting 31st had some help when Admiral John Nathman, Commander, US Fleet Forces who was visiting the team as a VIP guest, donned his Navy Racing firesuit and took up position in the Navy pits.
Nathman, an avid racer, owns a Shifter Kart and competes in amateur events around the southeastern United States.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. welcomed Nathmans' support and commented, "I don't know of anytime in racing history when a Four-Star, Admiral, who just happens to be a knowledgeable racer, pitches in and takes an active role with the team during a race, it was a very cool deal"
Conditions at what is usually a warm weather event was anything but warm, a strong cold front charged through southern Nevada on Friday night and brought with it a biting wind, occasional snow flurries and temperatures that struggled to break 40 degrees.
Driver, Mark McFarland commenting on the conditions said, "I know the team had to be freezing during the race but actually the cold temps make for a pretty comfortable cockpit."
The Navy Racing Crew Chief, Rich Hubbs, was asked if he was happy with the team's performance. "Happy? I'm never happy unless I'm standing over there in Victory Lane celebrating but I do think it was an important weekend in the development of Mark and the Navy team. When you travel with the team and listen to every practice session and every pit stop you begin to look and listen for certain things; Things that enable you to gauge how the team is gelling. I heard some very encouraging things this weekend, the results will come soon."
The Navy # 88 is now 22nd in Owners Points, up two positions from last week.
