Leffler Takes on Vegas to Become the Highest-Finishing Busch Regular
After Saturday afternoon's qualifying session, Jason Leffler and the #32 Braun Racing team weren't sure what to expect when they went green later that day. The Lucas Oil Chevy qualified in the 37th position for the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
"I don't know what happened, we were strong in practice and I was really happy with the car. I knew I had a lot of work cut out for me for the next 300 miles," stated Leffler.
Leffler set his sights on the lead pack and charged up to the 15th position by lap 54.
"The car was good on long runs, I know at one point we were the quickest car out on the track," Leffler explained.
Leffler brought the #32 Lucas Oil Chevy down pit road four times for minor adjustments throughout the race. It was the final pit stop on lap 201 that proved to be the most significant call of the day. The caution flag flew with just two laps to go and the Braun Racing crew made the decision to bring the #32 car down pit road for four fresh tires. Jason restarted the race in the 14th position with just two laps to go.
Back out on the track, Jason settled in for an action packed ending between him and Tony Stewart. On the final lap, Jason battled it out with Tony for the 11th position. A few feet away from the finish line, Leffler was able to inch forward and won the battle for 11th.
"We made the right choice by taking on new tires on that last caution. The guys made a tough call, thankfully it was the right one," explained Leffler.
Jason moved the #32 Lucas Oil Chevy up 26 spots during the Sam's Town 300 and the 11th place finish was the highest of all the NASCAR Busch series regulars.
Next weekend the #32 ABF U-Pack team and driver Jason Leffler will head south to Atlanta, Georgia. Live coverage of the Nicorette 300 begins this Saturday, March 18th at 3:00 p.m. ET on FX.
