CONCORD, NC - Evans Motorsports issued a press release this morning stating that two-time Busch Series champion Randy LaJoie has been released from his obligations as driver of the No. 7 Kleenex Chevrolet. LaJoie has driven the car for Evans since 2001.
The all time Busch Series money winner, won two races for the team in 2001, but has been winless the last two seasons.
"Randy has been a great asset to the Evans Motorsports program, said Ed Evans, owner of the No. 7 Chevy. "He is a proven champion and a great person. Unfortunately, our program has not performed to the level I expect. We are half way through the season and we continue to struggle at the track. This is our third season together and we haven't been able to make a serious run at the championship.
"While many Busch Series teams have struggled to secure sponsorship this year, that hasn't been our problem. We have a great sponsor in Kimberly- Clark and we owe them a better performing team. It's hard to identify a single reason for our challenges at the track however it's clear we need to make some changes."
Evans made no comment on who would permanently replace LaJoie, instead stating that many drivers will take the wheel in the upcoming weeks.
"We will use this time to put some veterans as well as some rookies in the car and see what works" said Evans.
Greg Biffle, who currently pilots the No. 16 Ford for Roush Racing in the Winston Cup Series, will drive the No. 7 Chevy this weekend at Daytona. The 2002 Busch Series champion will also fill in for a select number of other events, to be announced. Joe Nemechek was also named as a possible replacement for some races.
"Our goal for the remainder of the season is pretty simple," commented Evans. "We are going to win races. We are putting some of the best talent in the garage in this car and I expect to see the winner's circle before the end of the season".
