Compton breaks track record, finishes 4th in Kentucky.

Sparta, KY (June 15, 2003) -- Stacy Compton and his Crew have been promising that they would get the "monkey off their backs" over the last few weeks. Engine and other mechanical failures had mired the team with poor finishes over the last two events. Compton made good on his promise at the Kentucky Speedway, shattering the old track speed record by over two miles per hour on his way to the first Pole of his career.

Stated Compton after the lap, "I don't know where that lap came from but it sure was fast. We were good in practice in three of the four turns. The bumps in turn one were the only place where I was losing time. We put our heads together after practice and came up with a shock package that we thought would fix the problem. Looks like we were right."

Compton lead the field to the green flag but was overtaken by outside pole-sitter Bobby Hamilton, Jr. He settled into a comfortable rhythm in second place and waited for Hamilton to wear his tires out and come back to him. That never happened. Commented Crew Chief Steve Plattenberger, "Our car handled awesome all night. I just can't believe how fast Hamilton was. We had nothing for him tonight."

The fourth place finish was Compton's second top-five of the season and moved him back into 14th place in the season points standings. The Busch Series is idle this week and races again on June 29, 2003 at the Milwaukee Mile.
