McLaughlin Finishes 11th in Kansas
KANSAS CITY, KANSAS -- Mike McLaughlin had another solid performance in # 25 Team Marines Ford Taurus here Saturday finishing 11th just behind teammate Wally Dallenbach who drove the Team Rensi # 35 Mr. Clean Ford Taurus.
McLaughlin began the weekend by qualifying his Team Marines Ford Taurus in the 13th position. Following qualifying Crew Chief Harold Holly and the Team Marines crew went to work preparing the # 25 Ford for racing conditions. Holly had the car working well in the turns, the car was just lacking the pull it needed down the long straight-aways.
The race began on Saturday with McLaughlin working his way quickly into the top ten. Despite getting beat down the straight-aways, McLaughlin was able to out-run most of his competitors through the turns. McLaughlin fought a free car during the first half of the race.
Trouble struck at lap 103 during a yellow flag pit stop when one of the lug nuts popped free and McLaughlin had to come back around and pit again. McLaughlin was again able to race into the top-10 over the second half of the race. Several late caution flags tightened up the field and allowed several drivers to overcome McLaughlin in the final laps.
"We were disappointed in our performance today after such a great finish in Dover. Harold and the guys fought hard all day long," McLaughlin said. "I knew we were in trouble when the late caution flag flew. Overall this was a solid weekend for us."
