CHARLOTTE, N.C., (Nov. 7, 2001)– As Phoenix Racing and driver Jimmy Spencer prepare for the final race of a spectacularly successful 2001 NASCAR Busch Grand National season, Team Yellow Racing announced today that it has signed a two-year commitment with owner James Finch to extend its sponsorship of the #1 Yellow Chevrolet.
The deal will make Yellow the primary sponsor of the #1 Chevrolet driven by Jimmy Spencer for 24 companion NASCAR Winston Cup Series/Busch Series events during the 2002 season.
"Yellow is the best Busch sponsor that I’ve ever had," said Spencer. "That’s why I’m coming back. They’ve created more excitement and enthusiasm than most Cup sponsors. I visited Yellow employees at the Kansas City and Chicago terminals, and they have really been behind our race program. I want to reward them with a few more wins next season.
"I love working for James," added Spencer. "He just wants to win races and that’s the best trait an owner can have. He runs things his way. His decisions aren’t based on what other people think. They are made in the interest of the race team and that normally means that I’m going to get a fast car each and every week."
Spencer has posted three wins, two poles, five top fives and 10 top 10s in just 17 starts with Team Yellow Racing since he took over the driver responsibilities four races into the 2001 season. He hopes to improve those statistics in the Hot Wheels 300 Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway—the final race of the Busch season. Over his entire Busch career, the 44-year-old Spencer has earned 11 wins in 181 starts, as well as three poles, 42 top fives and 83 top 10s.
"Working with Marc Reno (#1 crew chief), Johnny Allen (#1 car chief) and the rest of the guys has been great. I would come back for that Richmond car alone," said Spencer, who swept both Richmond (Va.) events this season (May 4 and Sept. 7). "They have a good Busch program down at their shop, and we just seem to work well with each other. We communicate well, their equipment is fast and we have good pit stops. We hope to keep this going next season and we hope to win some more races for Yellow."
