Hooper to run twice at Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. (July 16, 1998) Former NASCAR Winston West Series champion Lance Hooper of Palmdale, Calif., will do double duty this weekend at California Speedway when he drives in a pair of races in Pontiacs prepared and entered by Richard Jackson's Precision Products Racing team based in Denver, N.C. Hooper, the 1996 series champion who drives for Jackson in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division, on Saturday will attempt to make his first start in the West Coast's NASCAR touring division since capturing the championship. Hooper became the first rookie driver to win the title in the series' 43-year history. Hooper won the title in the last race of the 1996 season and set the record for most wins by a rookie competitor with four. Hooper edged Jeff Krogh, who he now competes against on the NASCAR Busch Series, by 30 points. In his title season, he won two Bud Pole Awards and posted 12 top-10 finishes in 15 races. Hooper, who will drive Jackson's WCW Pontiac in Sunday's Kenwood Home & Car Audio 300 NASCAR Busch Series event, is no stranger to the Fontana area. When Hooper moved from California to North Carolina in December 1996, construction had begun on the two-mile track. Even though Palmdale is approximately 30 miles from California Speedway, Hooper has not seen or raced on the completed facility. In fact, Hooper has not been back to the Palmdale area since his move. "It'll be great to go back home," Hooper said. "With both friends and family in the stands, I'm sure I'll have some fans at both races. When my name is announced during driver introductions, It'll be nice to have fans that will recognize me. I'm really anxious to race in front of the home folks for the first time in months." While Hooper hasn't experienced the hometown support in quite some time, he'll take it one step further when several members of his former NASCAR Winston West Series team assist him for the NASCAR Winston West Series race on Saturday.
