1994 series Champion David Green found himself at the right place at the right time to win the Mr. Goodcents 300 at the Kansas Speedway.
Green, who led only a total of fourteen laps benefited from a series of late race incidents that put the Brewco Motorsports team on point as a caution fell on the final circuit, handing Green the win and testing NASCAR'S new no passing under the caution rules.
"I about ran into Bobby Jr, I am not sure if they said Woo, or Go", said Green. " What a big turn around, Dover was such a low point for us. These guys just never give up"
In a day dominated by Busch Whacker Michael Waltrip, The driver/owner could not close the deal after a weekend of dominance. Waltrip, who scored the pole by blistering the tracks qualifying record, went on to lead a total of ninety one laps before ending his day early as he fell victim to a tire failure with five laps remaining.
Waltrip's trip into the wall set the stage for a late race restart with Team Marines' driver Bobby Hamilton Jr poised to take his third win of the season.
It was not meant to be as Hamilton's Ford misfired on the restart, checking up in front of a hard charging Greg Biffle, sending Hamilton into the turn one wall, and Green to the checkers.
"It just sputtered and it wouldn't go", noted Hamilton, who see's Green as the luckiest man at the track.
The victory was a reversal of fortunes in the points chase. Green lost the lead to Dover race winner Brian Vickers, after being involved in an on track incident that sent him to the garage further benefited from Vickers misfortune. Vickers, who has demonstrated remarkable consistency crashed out early to finish thirty --second, dropping him back two positions in the championship point's battle.
Finishing behind Green were Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick, Jason Keller, and hank Parker Jr.
In a test of the new caution rules, several team had positions change as NASCAR froze the field, after determining the caution was in effect as the majority of cars were in turn one of the final lap.
Confusion insured as their spotters did not inform many drivers that the caution was out and continued to pass cars on the last lap.
The driver benefiting the most from the re-alignment was driver Jason Keller who crossed the finish line eighteenth, and was then re-scored to finish fourth.
NASCAR president Mike Helton addressed the issue indicating that the technology needed to avoid this type of problems has not been implemented;
"This is exactly the type of situation that kept us from changing the rule before we did". Noted Helton.
The series points battles remains the tightest in series History with Green on top if the leader board with fifty-nine points separating the top five drivers.
The series next heads to charlotte for the little trees 300 at the Lowes Motor Speedway.
