ELLIOTT SADLER GATEWAY INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY NASCAR BUSCH SERIES NOTES
Elliott Sadler, driver of the No. 66 Phillips 66/Trop Artic Chevrolet Monte Carlo, will attempt to defend the third of his three 1997 race titles when the NASCAR Busch Series visits Gateway International Raceway for the CarQuest Auto Parts 250. The inaugural event at St. Louis proved to be a miraculous weekend for the Phillips 66 Performance Racing Team. After wrecking his primary car in practice, Sadler had to qualify with his backup car with only one lap of practice. In addition, the inaugural event took place in the sweltering mid-summer heat of July which lasted nearly four hours. Sadler managed to outlast the blistering conditions to become the inaugural winner of the 250-lap event.
"That was probably the best race we ever ran," Sadler said. "When you wreck your primary car, you pretty much write that race off. And then when we took track conditions into consideration, our chances still didn't look too good. We just played survival of the fittest. We really didn't run the car that hard because we knew we did not have the fastest car. We were just trying to get a top-five finish."
Although the event will be taking place during a different time of year, one thing will be the same for Elliott Sadler when he returns to Gateway International Raceway. The reigning race champion will pilot the same car he raced at Gateway in the inaugural event. The car has logged one top-five finish this year, with a fifth- place finish at Darlington in the spring.
Aside from defending his race title, Elliott Sadler has a busy week ahead of him as the NASCAR Busch Series returns to Gateway International Raceway. Sadler arrives at the "Gateway to the West" on Wednesday, October 14, and will immediately go to meet with employees at the Phillips Pipeline Company in Cahokia, Ill. Sadler is scheduled to appear on "The Budweiser Motorsports Open Line" on October 14 from 8 to 9 p.m. Sadler will also participate in the St. Louis Auction and Celebrity Bartender night at Wild Country in Collinsville, Ill., on October 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. Phillips 66 will be entertaining approximately 200 guests in the hospitality village at Gateway on Saturday, October 17, during which Sadler will make an appearance to greet guests and sign autographs.
