THE DECISION TO PIT AND TAKE TIRES WITH 20 TO GO PAID OFF. "Yeah, it did. We were tight right before we came in for the pit stop and if we didn't do something like that we would have ended up worse than we did. So we just gambled and took tires. The Marines Ford was fast. That Robert Yates motor was just pulling down the straightaway. We got back to third, so we can't complain."
THE RED FLAG REALLY HELPED YOU BECAUSE YOU GAINED TWO SPOTS? "That helped a lot. We would have ended up fourth or fifth if it wasn't for that caution. I was fighting on the outside of those guys and it stuck. I was like, 'We've got their butt now.' We weren't the best Ford, but we were the second-best Ford. The Marines Ford was good. That's all we can hope for every week."
GREG BIFFLE -60-Grainger Taurus - VICTORY LANE INTERVIEW
"The Grainger Ford and the guys back at the shop have just been building us awesome cars. We've had runs like this all year, we just haven't been able to close the deal. I tell you this, the car was really good. These tires that Goodyear has on this concrete track just don't fall off at all. We adjusted on the race car, but I didn't know what to do. I said it was loose in and loose off and tight in the center. They made some air-pressure adjustments and she came around. I didn't have any idea about changes, but they did and it really worked for it today."
WHAT ABOUT THE ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS AND THE CONCERN OF RESTARTING AT THE END? "When the caution comes out you've always got a chance to look at your gauges. I noticed that I only had about 11-and-a-half volts and knew we were doomed. I shut all the fans down and everything. That was on the caution before the red flag, so we ran that whole stint and then got the red. I was wondering if it was gonna start, but the volts really maintained so we knew we were OK. We've just got to get the problem fixed so it doesn't take us out of a race."
KASEY KAHNE -98-Channellock Taurus (Finished 20th)
WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY? "Just how tight this place gets. I need to be more ready for it because there are a lot more g-forces the whole race. The cars get real hot in the sun and I just get tired. I was still going all-out at the end, but I just wish I was a little more ready for this race." DID YOU HOLD UP PHYSICALLY? "Yeah, I held up physically I'm just sore from being in there that long and not racing as good as I wanted to."
SCOTT RIGGS -10-Nesquik Taurus (Finished 11th)
"We weren't too bad. We just could never get our car working well. We struggled all day. We kept trying to free it up and I think we might have had a shock or something go bad. Something happened because we loosened it up so much we should have been backing in the corner. Instead, it was just tight all day long. There at the end we got hit on pit road and knocked the toe out. I thought we were gonna be the best we had been all day because we freed it up so much at the end again, but we knocked the toe out and just plowed all day. We just survived and didn't tear the car up. Maybe we go back and figure out what was wrong and fix it so it doesn't happen again and we'll be OK."
