Derrike Cope, driver of the Robinson Racing No. 49 Ford, crashed hard in turn one at tonight's Busch series Funai 250 at the Richmond International Raceway.

It appears that Cope's throttle stuck wide open as he entered turn one, the car accelerating as headed for the wall. Cope had the front wheels locked in an attempt to slow the car.

The impact tore the roof almost all his car as it slid along the wall. He finally stopped in turn two.

Safety crews were on the scene quickly and extracted Cope from his car. The race was red-flagged while Cope was tended to, and the track was cleaned up.

Cope was transported to the infield care center for treatment, where he was reported to be awake and alert but complaining of some right shoulder pain. He has spoken to his wife who is not at the track by phone. He will be transported to Memorial Regional Medical Center for further tests and evaluation.

Motorsport.com will have updates on Cope's condition as they become available.
