Daytona Beach, FL (February 18, 2001) - Michael Waltrip and the No. 99 Aaron's "Dream Machine" will chalk up the visit to Daytona International Speedway as a good learning experience.
Practice sessions this week were busy for all teams on the NASCAR Busch Grand National series, since the weather delayed and canceled many early morning practice sessions. The "Dream Machine" Chevrolet team changed set-ups numerous times, in order to see which one would mesh the best with the different weather conditions.
After completion of the Bud pole qualifying session, Waltrip was set to start the NAPA Auto Parts 300 in the 28th position. Waltrip then turned the 15th fastest lap in "happy hour", the final practice before the race.
At the drop of the green flag for the NAPA Auto Parts 300, Waltrip quickly gained several positions. Then on lap 14 the red flag was displayed for rain. The NAPA Auto Parts 300 was delayed for a little more than an hour. The Aaron's "Dream Machine" team was in 23rd position and made a pit stop that gained them 8 positions, placing them in 15th. The third caution of the day fell on lap 83. The "Dream Machine" came in for a pit stop in the 21st position and after a great pit stop, went out 13th. When the race restarted on lap 89, misfortune struck as the "Dream Machine" Chevrolet lost power and fell quickly to the back of the pack. Waltrip held on until lap 100, when the motor finally broke. It was a heart wrenching day for the No. 99 Aaron's "Dream Machine" Chevrolet team as they brought home a 37th place finish at the NAPA Auto Parts 300.
"We were a little off on power all day, maybe what broke in the engine was the reason for that. I really am proud of the team. They made the car handle perfect and I was able to get up through the field good on long runs," stated Waltrip.
Looking ahead to Las Vegas Motor Speedway Michael Waltrip finished fourth in the inaugural race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1997.
