Two-time Daytona 500 Winner - Michael Waltrip, To Compete at Nazareth
NEXTEL CUP Drivers Kahne, Biffle, Sauter & Possibly Gordon Will Join the Line-up
Nazareth, PA (May 14, 2004) -- This year fans can come to Nazareth Speedway and watch NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers Michael Watlrip, Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Johnny Sauter and, pending sponsorship, Robby Gordon. That's right, all have shown interest in Nazareth Speedway and at least four of the five Cup drivers have confirmed their attendance and will be competing at the "World's Fastest Mile" in less than two weeks -- right in your own backyard! It's not too late to get your tickets for the Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200 at Nazareth Speedway on May 22-23. Tickets are still available for this NASCAR extravaganza featuring the NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series races on Sunday, May 23.
Two-time Daytona 500 champion, Michael Waltrip didn't plan to run the entire season in the Busch series however, since the Aaron's 312 at Talladega Superspeedway he has shown interest on several occasions about racing at Nazareth Speedway. "We're going to run until possibly Charlotte or even Nazareth. That would get us through Dover running all the races." Waltrip said during a NASCAR teleconference on April 25 and confirmed his attendance today. Waltrip drives the #99 Aaron's Chevrolet in the Busch Series and until this past Saturday was first in points. He now ranks second overall, only 16 points behind the leader.
Gordon loves to race and wants to come to Nazareth Speedway to compete in the NASCAR Busch Series event. According to NASCAR.com "Gordon is vigorously pursuing sponsorship to allow him to do Busch Series events this month at Nazareth, for which he's currently entered and Lowe's Motor Speedway, which is not on his schedule." Gordon, driver of the #55 Fruit of the Loom Chevrolet in the Busch Series, ranks fifth in the NASCAR Busch Series standings. "We have said since the beginning that as long as we are in reach of the championship, we would continue to race," commented Gordon. Gordon will also compete in the Indianapolis 500 later this month.
"We look forward to hosting the NASCAR Busch Series because it is such a great series," said Craig Rust, President of Nazareth Speedway. "Having these premier (Nextel) Cup drivers in the Lehigh Valley is a pretty big deal in itself, but having a two-time Daytona 500 champion, like Michael Waltrip, is an exceptionally unique opportunity. We are hoping to generate additional enthusiasm among fans, so they come to the Nazareth Speedway and see first-hand what's in their own backyard."
Kahne, Biffle and Sauter are all running full-time in both the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and NASCAR Busch Series. Including Waltrip, all four have joined the line-up and are expected to compete at Nazareth Speedway on May 23rd in the Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200. The NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series will race directly after the Busch Series in the Service Electric 100.
Two events are featured on the 2004 schedule at Nazareth Speedway, highlighted by both the Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200, NASCAR Busch Series on May 22-23, where NASCAR Nextel Cup Series driver Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, and Michael Waltrip will compete for the trophy, and by the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series, returning on August 29 in the Firestone Indy 225.
